What is Mezym Forte (Pancreatin) for Digestive Disorders?

Mezym Forte contains the active ingredient pancreatin — digestive enzymes derived from the pancreas of cattle or swine, including lipase, amylase, and protease. It is prescribed for digestive disorders (maldigestion) caused by inadequate or reduced supply of digestive enzymes by the pancreas, or reduced activity of these enzymes in the intestines.

Mezym Forte Indications

Mezym Forte may be prescribed when pancreatic enzyme deficiency occurs due to:

• Chronic inflammation of the pancreas (chronic pancreatitis)
• Cystic fibrosis
• Problems caused by a tumour or gallstones
• Malfunction of the liver and gallbladder
• Surgery on the pancreas
• Accelerated intestinal transit after gastric or intestinal surgery, anxiety, or inflammatory bowel disease
• Difficulty absorbing nutrients from certain foods, with loss of appetite, belching, nausea, and diarrhoea
• Gluten intolerance
• Inflammatory bowel disease (especially Crohn’s disease)
• Diabetes mellitus, AIDS, Shwachman syndrome, or Sjögren’s syndrome

Mezym Forte is also used before planned X-ray or ultrasound of the abdomen as a preparatory measure, and to improve digestion following dietary errors in patients without pre-existing digestive conditions.

How Mezym Forte Works

The active enzymes lipase, amylase, and protease support normal gastrointestinal function by improving digestion and intestinal absorption of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and other nutrients. The acid-resistant coating protects the enzymes from gastric juice; dissolution and release begin in the duodenum, where the enzymes act locally in the intestinal lumen.

Dosage and Administration

Take Mezym Forte before or with meals. Swallow tablets whole — do not chew, as this destroys the acid-resistant coating and inactivates the enzymes.

For adults: the recommended dose is 1–2 tablets before meals, 1–3 times daily. An additional 1–4 tablets may be taken with food if needed. The course of therapy ranges from a single dose (for dietary indulgence) to several months or years (for severe pathologies requiring enzyme replacement therapy).

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
• Acute pancreatitis
• Period of exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis

Side Effects

• Allergic reactions
• Changes in stool consistency
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain and epigastric discomfort

Prolonged use may result in hyperuricosuria or hyperuricaemia. Rarely, in patients with cystic fibrosis receiving high-dose therapy, narrowing of the intestine in the ileocaecal region may occur. Overdose may cause constipation in paediatric patients.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The safety of Mezym Forte for the foetus or infant has not been sufficiently established in clinical trials. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is permitted only after consulting a doctor and carefully weighing the benefit-to-risk ratio.

Drug Interactions

Simultaneous use with iron-containing drugs may reduce their absorption. Antacids containing calcium carbonate and/or magnesium hydroxide may reduce the therapeutic efficacy of Mezym Forte.
