What is Thrombo ASS 100mg? Acetylsalicylic Acid Gastro-Resistant Tablets to Prevent Blood Clots

Thrombo ASS 100mg gastro-resistant film-coated tablets each contain the active substance acetylsalicylic acid (100 mg), which has antithrombotic properties, reducing the risk of blood clots. The gastro-resistant film coating reduces gastrointestinal side effects caused by acetylsalicylic acid.

Thrombo ASS Indications

• Reducing the risk of myocardial infarction in patients with angina pectoris
• Prevention after myocardial infarction
• Prevention of thrombosis after surgery of blood vessels, such as coronary artery bypass graft
• Secondary prevention of previous ischaemic attacks and apoplexy
• Acute myocardial infarction
• Periodic treatment for migraine

Contraindications

Do not take Thrombo ASS if you have:

• Hypersensitivity to aspirin, salicylates, or any component of the product
• Gastrointestinal ulcers
• Predisposition to bleeding, decreased platelets (thrombocytopenia), or coagulation disorders (haemophilia)
• Severely impaired renal function and increased oxalate in the urine (oxaluria)

Take Special Care With Thrombo ASS

Before elective surgery, the antiplatelet effect of Thrombo ASS and the use of other salicylates or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory or antirheumatic agents should be considered in consultation with your doctor. Regular monitoring of renal function is necessary with prolonged high-dose use of acetylsalicylic acid. In rare cases, dangerous complications (Reye’s syndrome) have been reported in children and adolescents. Exercise caution if you have known hypersensitivity to other analgesics for rheumatic diseases, bronchial asthma, haemolytic anaemia, gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. gastritis), or liver and/or kidney dysfunction.

Drug Interactions

Thrombo ASS increases:

• The effect of medicines that slow blood clotting (e.g. coumarin derivatives, heparin, dipyridamole, sulfinpyrazone)
• The effect of drugs that reduce blood sugar levels (sulphonylureas)
• The effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic agents
• The effects of methotrexate
• The risk of gastrointestinal bleeding with glucocorticoids or alcohol

Concentrations of digoxin, barbiturates, and lithium in the blood may also be increased.

Thrombo ASS weakens:

• The effect of dehydrating agents (spironolactone and furosemide)
• Drugs that enhance excretion of uric acid (probenecid, sulfinpyrazone)
• Medications that lower high blood pressure

Concomitant use of ibuprofen may reduce the antiplatelet effect of Thrombo ASS 100mg. In prolonged use, antacids, H2 blockers, and anticholinergics may necessitate a dose increase of acetylsalicylic acid. Co-administration with tetracyclines may lead to non-resorbable complexes — allow at least 1–3 hours between different drugs.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use Thrombo ASS in the last three months of pregnancy as it can cause prolongation of bleeding time in the mother and child during childbirth. Use during the first six months of pregnancy and during lactation only when absolutely necessary.

Thrombo ASS Dosage

Swallow film-coated tablets whole with some liquid after meals — do not chew or split, as this destroys the gastro-resistant coating.

• Reducing risk of MI, post-MI prevention, secondary prevention after TIA and apoplexy: 30–300 mg acetylsalicylic acid daily
• Prevention of thrombosis after vascular surgery (e.g. coronary bypass): 50–300 mg acetylsalicylic acid daily
• Acute myocardial infarction and periodic migraine therapy: 100–300 mg acetylsalicylic acid daily

Side Effects

• Hypersensitivity reactions (bronchospasm, skin reactions)
• Stomach complaints (nausea, vomiting)
• Gastrointestinal bleeding, which in rare cases can lead to iron deficiency anaemia
• Prolongation of bleeding time
• Provocation of an asthma attack
• Thrombocytopenia
• Continued high-dose use may be associated with liver and kidney damage
• Higher doses can lead to dizziness, tinnitus, or gastrointestinal ulceration with bleeding

Storage

Keep in the original packaging, protected from humidity and light, at temperatures below 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Shelf life is three years from date of manufacture. Do not use after the expiry date.

Active substance: Acetylsalicylic acid 100 mg per tablet. Tablet core excipients: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, silica colloidal anhydrous, potato starch. Film-coating: talc, glycerol triacetate, methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate, purified water.
