What is Tavegyl (Clemastine) 20 Tablets?

Tavegyl tablets contain the active ingredient clemastine (1 mg per tablet), a selective histamine H1-receptor blocker belonging to the benzhydryl ester group of antihistamines. Tavegyl selectively inhibits histamine H1-receptors and reduces capillary permeability, providing both antiallergic and antipruritic effects with a fast onset and long duration of action.

Antihistaminic activity reaches its maximum after 5–7 hours, persists for 10–12 hours, and in some cases up to 24 hours.

Tavegyl Indications

• Hay fever and other allergic rhinopathies
• Urticaria of various origins
• Itching and pruritic dermatoses
• Acute and chronic eczema, contact dermatitis, and drug eruptions (as an additional agent)
• Insect bites

Dosage and Administration

Take Tavegyl before meals with water.

• Adults and children over 12 years: 1 tablet (1 mg) morning and evening. In difficult-to-treat cases, the daily dose may be increased to up to 6 tablets (6 mg).
• Children aged 6–12 years: half to one tablet before breakfast and at night.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to clemastine or other antihistamines of similar chemical structure
• Diseases of the lower respiratory tract (including bronchial asthma)
• Children under 1 year of age
• Lactation (breastfeeding)
• Concurrent use of MAO inhibitors

Use with caution in patients with pyloric stenosis, stenosing peptic ulcer, pyloroduodenal obstruction, bladder neck obstruction, prostatic hypertrophy with urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, or cardiovascular disease (including hypertension).

Side Effects

CNS: drowsiness, fatigue, headache, dizziness, tremor, sedation, confusion, incoordination; rarely in children, stimulating effects such as anxiety, irritability, insomnia, euphoria, or convulsions.

Digestive system: nausea, epigastric pain, constipation, vomiting; rarely dry mouth or reduced appetite.

Urinary system: very rarely, urinary frequency or difficulty urinating.

Respiratory: rarely, thickening of bronchial secretions, nasal congestion, or difficulty breathing.

Cardiovascular: rarely, decreased blood pressure (especially in elderly patients), palpitations, or arrhythmia.

Dermatological: very rarely, photosensitisation.

Sensory organs: visual disturbances, diplopia, acute labyrinthitis, tinnitus.

Blood: haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopaenia, agranulocytosis.

Special Instructions and Drug Interactions

When taking Tavegyl, refrain from driving vehicles or operating machinery and other activities requiring increased attention. Tavegyl potentiates the effect of CNS depressants (hypnotics, sedatives, tranquillisers), antimuscarinic agents, and ethanol.

Composition and Storage

Each tablet contains 1 mg clemastine with excipients: lactose monohydrate, povidone, corn starch, magnesium stearate, and talc. Store between 15°C and 30°C, out of reach of children. Shelf life: 5 years. Pack: 20 tablets.
