What is Acic 200mg? Acyclovir Tablets for Herpes Simplex and Herpes Zoster (Shingles)

Acic 200mg contains the active ingredient acyclovir (200 mg per tablet), an antiviral medicine used to treat infections caused by the herpes simplex virus. This includes skin and mucous membrane infections, genital herpes (both primary and recurrent), and herpes zoster (shingles). Prophylactic treatment with Acic 200mg is indicated for adults with severe forms of herpes who experience very frequent recurrences.

When Not to Take Acic 200mg

Do not use Acic 200 if you are hypersensitive to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any other ingredient in the product.

Special Precautions

• Use only after consulting a doctor if you have immune system disorders
• This product contains lactose — consult your doctor if you have an intolerance to some sugars
• Adults are more likely to experience renal impairment; monitor renal function and drink plenty of fluids during treatment

Drug Interactions

Probenecid reduces the renal clearance of acyclovir, which can increase its half-life. Interactions with cimetidine have also been observed.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Limited experience with acyclovir tablets during pregnancy has not shown acyclovir-related effects on pregnancy or the health of the foetus or newborn. Use during pregnancy requires careful consideration of risks and benefits. Acyclovir is present in breast milk after taking acyclovir-containing products — breastfeeding should be stopped during treatment with Acic 200.

Driving and Operating Machinery

No evidence of impaired driving or operating machines during treatment with Acic 200.

Acic 200mg Dosage

Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections (adults): 1 tablet (200 mg acyclovir) 5 times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days. In severe initial infections, treatment may be extended. In patients with severe immunodeficiency or impaired absorption, double the dose to 400 mg. Begin treatment as early as possible after onset.

Prophylaxis in immunologically healthy patients: 1 tablet (200 mg acyclovir) 4 times a day at 6-hour intervals, or 2 tablets (400 mg acyclovir) at 12-hour intervals. An effective dose may also be 3 × 200 mg per day at 8-hour intervals or 2 × 200 mg per day at 12-hour intervals. In cases of re-infection, administer 1 tablet (200 mg acyclovir) at 4-hour intervals for 5 days regardless of total daily dose. Periodically interrupt therapy at 6- to 12-month intervals to monitor changes in disease progression.

Prevention in immunocompromised patients: 1 tablet (200 mg acyclovir) 4 times a day at 6-hour intervals.

Treatment of varicella and herpes zoster: 800 mg of acyclovir 5 times daily at 4-hour intervals for 7 days. In patients with severe immunodeficiency, intravenous administration should be considered. Severely immunosuppressed patients (e.g. after organ transplantation or with impaired intestinal absorption): 2 tablets (400 mg acyclovir) 4 times a day at 6-hour intervals. Early treatment of herpes zoster with acyclovir has resulted in successful pain relief and may reduce the incidence of post-herpetic neuralgia.

Children with herpes simplex virus infection: Children over 2 years: adult dose. Children under 2 years: half the adult dose.

Patients with renal insufficiency:

• Creatinine clearance below 10 ml/min/1.73 m²: 200 mg acyclovir (1 tablet) twice daily at 12-hour intervals
• Creatinine clearance 10–25 ml/min: 800 mg three times daily at 8-hour intervals

How to Take Acic 200mg

Take tablets without chewing, with a sufficient amount of fluid (e.g. a glass of water), preferably after a meal. Begin treatment as soon as possible after the first symptoms of infection appear. For recurrent herpes simplex infections, start at the very first signs of relapse (e.g. itching, sensation of tension, the first blisters).

Possible Side Effects

Rarely reported: rash (disappearing after discontinuation), gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain), nervous system symptoms (dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, insomnia), fatigue, headache, breathing difficulties, and temporary thinning of hair (relationship to Acic 200 is uncertain). Rare temporary changes in some laboratory parameters of liver, kidney, and blood counts have been observed (increase in bilirubin, liver enzymes, serum urea and creatinine, and slight decreases in haematological parameters).

Storage

Do not use after the expiry date stated on the packaging. Keep out of reach of children.
