What is Pharmatex 20mg Vaginal Tablets (Benzalkonium Chloride Topical Contraceptive)?

Pharmatex 20mg vaginal tablets contain benzalkonium chloride (20 mg per tablet) and are used as a topical contraceptive. They significantly reduce the possibility of pregnancy but do not completely eliminate it; efficacy depends on strict observance of the rules of use.

Who Can Use Pharmatex Vaginal Tablets

The tablets may be used by any woman of childbearing age. They are especially suitable for women who are temporarily or permanently contraindicated from using birth control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), diaphragms, or spirals. They may also be used:

• After birth, breastfeeding, or around the time of the menopause
• Occasionally, if a contraceptive pill is forgotten — in this case, both methods must be combined until the end of the cycle
• As an additional tool alongside intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs), especially if nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are taken regularly

Do Not Use Pharmatex Vaginal Tablets If

• You are allergic (hypersensitive) to benzalkonium chloride or any of the excipients
• There is damage to the lining of the genitals, or if this occurs after one application of the product
• You are using other medicinal products for vaginal application (for the treatment of fungus, Trichomonas, herpes, antibacterial agents, antiseptics, or topical oestrogens) and soap, unless medically indicated

Special Precautions

• Do not use soap to wash after intercourse — even a minimal amount of soap neutralises the spermicidal effect. Wash outside with clean water only.
• Wait at least two hours before vaginal lavage.
• Use regardless of the stage of your menstrual cycle.
• If another vaginal treatment is prescribed, wait for it to finish before using this medicine.
• The use of other medicinal products for topical treatment can lead to inactivation of the spermicide. It should not be used concomitantly with soap and other products for vaginal application, unless medically indicated.

Pregnancy, Breast-feeding, and Driving

No evidence of adverse effects has been found during use in pregnancy and breastfeeding; the product may be administered. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other medicine. No described effect on the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Pharmatex vaginal tablets can cause side effects, though not everybody gets them. Possible reactions include allergic reactions, local intolerance, burning sensation, and irritation.
