What is Pharmatex 12mg/g Contraceptive Vaginal Cream (Benzalkonium Chloride)?

Pharmatex 12mg/g vaginal cream contains benzalkonium chloride (1.2 g per 100 g of cream) as a spermicidal active substance and is used as a topical contraceptive. It significantly reduces the possibility of pregnancy but does not completely eliminate it; efficacy depends on strict observance of the rules of use.

Who Can Use Pharmatex Vaginal Cream

The cream may be used by any woman of childbearing age. It is especially suitable for women who are temporarily or permanently contraindicated from using birth control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), diaphragms, or spirals. It may also be used:

• After birth, breastfeeding, or around the time of the menopause
• Occasionally, if a contraceptive pill is forgotten — in this case, both methods must be combined until the end of the cycle
• As an additional tool alongside intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs), especially if nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are taken regularly

Contraindications — Do Not Use If

• You are allergic (hypersensitive) to benzalkonium chloride or any of the excipients
• There is damage to the lining of the genitals
• You are using other medicinal products for vaginal application (for the treatment of fungus, Trichomonas, herpes, antibacterial agents, antiseptics, or topical oestrogens) and soap, unless medically indicated

Special Precautions

• Do not use soap to wash after intercourse — soap neutralises the spermicidal effect. Wash outside with clean water only.
• Wait at least two hours before vaginal lavage.
• Use regardless of the stage of your menstrual cycle.
• If another vaginal treatment is prescribed, wait for it to finish before using this medicine.

Pregnancy, Breast-feeding, and Driving

No evidence of adverse effects has been found during use in pregnancy and breastfeeding; the product may be administered. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other medication. No described effect on the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Pharmatex vaginal cream can cause side effects, though not everybody gets them. Possible reactions include allergic reactions, local intolerance, burning sensation, and irritation.

How to Use Pharmatex Vaginal Cream

Pharmatex vaginal cream must always be administered before sexual intercourse, regardless of the period of the cycle. Attach the dispensing applicator to the end of the tube. Fill to the symbol without trapping air bubbles. Detach the applicator from the tube. Insert the applicator as deeply as possible into the vagina while lying down. Slowly push the plunger to release the cream into the vagina. The protective contraceptive effect is immediate and lasts for at least 10 hours. Insert a new applicator dose before each further act of intercourse. Do not use soap to wash after intercourse. Vaginal lavage may be performed at least two hours after intercourse.

Ingredients and Storage

Active substance: benzalkonium chloride 1.2 g per 100 g of cream (as a 50% aqueous solution of benzalkonium chloride 2.4 g). Other ingredients: citric acid, ethylene glycol stearate (Tefose 63), sodium phosphate dibasic dodecahydrate, lavender essential oil, purified water. Store below 25°C in original packaging.
